The breakdown of a couple’s marriage is usually a difficult experience to endure. Divorce can involve a total lifestyle change for those involved, not to mention the many feelings and emotions that it can bring up. A recent article suggests ways to cope with the unsettling and painful feelings that often accompany divorce.
Moving on After Divorce
One thing that most people probably agree on is that divorce is often hurtful, no matter the reasons or circumstances surrounding it. Divorce not only causes feelings of loss and disappointment, but also brings with it a disruption of routine and other relationships, as well as uncertainty about the future.
The good news is that many people move on from divorce and successfully recover; it just takes some time. It is normal to experience different feelings and to be less than your usual self for a certain amount of time following a divorce. In addition to seeking the companionship of friends and family during this time, the following tips may be beneficial in coping with a divorce:
Allow yourself to grieve the loss of the relationship. Grieving is a natural reaction to loss, and divorce can involve multiple losses, from loss of companionship to loss of hopes and dreams. In order to properly grieve after divorce, resist the urge to fight the feelings and feel free to talk about them with others or in a journal. Keep in mind that moving on from this experience is your goal, and remind yourself that you have a future.
Reach out to others. Having support from others through the grieving process is important for healing. People who have been through similar experiences may be particularly helpful to you during this time. Spend time with people who support and value you and surround yourself with people who will be positive and truly listen to you without judging or being critical. Do not hesitate to get outside help if you feel you need it, either through a counselor or support group. This time after divorce is even a good opportunity to seek out and form new friendships with others.
Take care of yourself. Divorce is stressful, and when going through an emotional and life-changing event, it is important to still care for yourself. Make time each day to do something that calms and soothes you. Pay attention to what you need and want, and try to stick to a routine to promote a sense of structure. Put off any major life decisions until you are feeling less emotional. Avoid using unhealthy means of coping such as drugs, alcohol, or food. It might be a good time to consider exploring new interests and looking at this stage of life as a new beginning.
